How feather yarn works

The plush comes from a pile of fine fibres held in a yarn core by twist. The fibres are the softness; the twist is the grip that keeps them.

High-twist yarn locks the pile to the core. Low-twist yarn holds it the way a loose fist holds sand.

What the washing machine does

Every cycle tugs at the pile. Loose fibres pull free and shed — that is the fluff in the lint trap. What remains flattens and tangles into mats, and the tangles rub into pills.

By roughly wash five, a low-twist sock has shed its softness and worn its verdict. That is also about when a December gift meets its recipient’s honest opinion.

The shop-floor test

Rub the pile hard with a dry palm. Fibres on your hand in the shop are the preview of the lint trap at home.

Then ask the supplier for the twist and a wash spec. The ones who have specified their yarn answer immediately; the ones who bought a photograph change the subject to softness.
